A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants. Periodontists are experts in the treatment of all forms of periodontal disease, including gingivitis, periodontitis, and gingival recession.
The American Dental Association recognizes periodontics as one of the nine specialties of dentistry. Periodontists receive extensive training, including three years of additional education beyond dental school.
By choosing a specialist you will benefit from the latest procedures for treating periodontal disease and placing dental implants tailored to your needs. In addition, Dr. Herrera can perform cosmetic periodontal procedures to help you achieve the smile you desire.
Please assist us at the time of your initial visit to the office by providing the following information:
Please Note: All patients under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consultation appointment.
Please notify the office if you have a medical condition or concern prior to surgery (e.g. artificial heart valves or joints, heart murmurs requiring pre-medication, severe diabetes, or hypertension).
We will complete an in-depth medical and dental health history and a thorough examination to measure for bone loss, loose teeth, bite, oral cancer screening, TMJ, and other signs of periodontal disease.
Dr. Herrera is available Monday and Wednesday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Tuesday, Thursday & Friday from 8:00 Am to 2:00 PM. We will schedule your appointment as promptly as possible. Please allow approximately 90 minutes for your initial visit. If you have pain or an emergency situation, every attempt will be made to see you that day.
We try to stay on schedule to minimize waiting at the time of your appointment. Referral of emergency patients can cause delays to the schedule, and your understanding and patience are very much appreciated.
Our doctor and staff are proud to be a team whose primary mission is to deliver the finest and most comprehensive periodontal services available today. We are concerned about your dental care and want to ensure you that it is performed in the most responsible manner. In order to assist you with the investment in your dental health, we have outlined our payment policy.
For single-visit procedures (exams and periodontal maintenance visits) our policy is that payment is due in full at the time of service. If you have insurance benefits, as a courtesy to you we will bill your insurance and you will be responsible for the co pay. For your convenience we accept cash, checks, money orders, and credit card payment (MasterCard, Visa, and Discover).
After calculation of your estimated insurance benefits, your portion is due on the date of service.
For individuals desiring a more flexible payment plan, the open account plan may be the best choice. This plan allows for three equal payments to be paid out over a period of three months. The first payment of one-third is due at the time of treatment, the second payment is due one month after treatment, and the third and final payment is due two months after treatment.
For your convenience, payments may be made with cash, personal check, and bank draft, Discover, Visa, or MasterCard. If you have any problems or questions, please ask our staff. They are well informed and up-to-date. They can be reached by phone at (650) 556-9999 or by fax at (650) 556-9990. Our office location is 3301 EL CAMINO REAL, SUITE 270, ATHERTON, CA 94027. Please call if you have any questions or concerns regarding your initial visit.
Our benefits coordinators deal with many different insurance companies. Some companies offer many different dental and medical plans. These companies can change benefits, co-pays, and deductibles many times throughout the year. We do our best to provide you with accurate coverage estimates based on information available to us. At times, it is almost impossible to accurately estimate a patient’s insurance co-payment. Many insurance companies will not give out fees until after the treatment is completed. Dealing with these companies can be difficult and time consuming. As a courtesy, we ask that you keep us informed of any change to your insurance. It is important that all information about you and your insurance is current.
Although we will gladly file a claim on your behalf, you may wish to submit the claim yourself. In general, insurers process claims filed directly by patients faster than those filed by the service providers (dental offices).
Further, most dental insurance policies are limited and often only pay for a portion of the procedure(s) that may need to be done.
The majority of dental plans reimburse approximately 30-80 percent of treatment costs. With this in mind, we ask that 40 percent of the fee be paid at the time of treatment.
Dr. Herrera is not a member of any HMO plans.
Dr. Herrera is not a Medicare provider.
As a courtesy to our patients with medical and/or dental benefit plans, we will submit necessary claim forms, receipts, and other information to your insurance company. Your payment is due the day of your treatment.
Upon receipt of an insurance payment, any balance due will be billed to you. If you have deposited an excessive co-payment, it will be refunded to you.
We will be as gentle as possible. The periodontal exam can be completed with little or no discomfort.
We will need current periodontal x-rays in order to see disease not otherwise visible. If your referring dentist has taken x-rays, you may request that they be forwarded to us.
Since all patients are different, your periodontist must complete your examination before establishing your treatment planning and the fee for care. The fee for periodontal treatment can vary considerably depending on the type of problems and the complexity and length of treatment. An approximate fee can usually be determined at the initial visit; but on occasion, some initial treatment or further diagnostics must be completed before the final treatment planning can be established. Our philosophy of practice is to treat as conservatively as possible to attain treatment goals.
Dental insurance policies often cover periodontal treatment. Please bring all dental benefit information and cards to your appointment. As a courtesy to our patients we will call your insurance company in advance to provide you with the most current information regarding your benefits. Following your consultation, upon request, we can submit a claim to predetermine your insurance benefits for your recommended treatment.
Not everyone needs periodontal surgery. If treated early, gum disease can be controlled without surgery. We will make recommendations based on your individual situation. Our philosophy of practice is to treat as conservatively as possible to attain treatment goals.
The recent advances in periodontal treatment allow us to successfully treat most teeth.
Our office and your dentist will work closely together. If crowns and fillings are needed your dentist will provide them. Regular visits to your dentist are an important part of periodontal maintenance.
Periodontal disease is a progressive, painless infection. Delay can cause you further bone loss and more expense. If your teeth are lost, dentures are never as effective as your own natural teeth.
You may preregister with our office by filling out our secure online Patient Registration Form. After you have completed the form, please make sure to press the Submit button at the bottom to automatically send us your information. On your first visit to our office, we will have your completed form available for your signature. The security and privacy of your personal data is one of our primary concerns and we have taken every precaution to protect it.

"Thanks a thousand time for your supurb treatment! I just posted this on Yelp and would be happy to post it to any other review site that is ofvalue to your practice. Dr. Herrera is a masterful periodontal surgeon. I am absolutely delighted with the results ofthe gum grafting performed by Dr. Herrera. I was hoping for a good result and instead, I look in the mirror and see EXCEPTIONAL results! I am pleased with my aesthetically improved smile and also know that the risk of future tooth loss is diminished. Dr. Herrera is a masterful surgeon. First, she performed a thorough exam and meticulously recorded observations of gum recession on each tooth. On the same visit, she prepared a surgical plan and discussed her recommendations and approach with me. etHerteam provided me with clear instruction on what to do (and what to expect) both before and ommen s: after the procedure. She provided me with her cell phone number to use post-op if I needed it. Her team ofprofessionals is just that, a team that works likea?:the best analogy that I can think of is the Super Bowl winning San Francisco 4gers! Her office is full of smiling faces while assisting patients with care, compassion and competence. The surgical assistant, Oriana, patiently answered my questions at my pre-op visit and then provided outstanding care; she remembers to inform the patient about what is about to happen (instead of blasting sensitive gums with a cold air-gun or rinsing with a shot of cold water). Rounding out the team are Julie, the patient care coordinator, who provided a detailed estimate of the costs associated with the procedure and Kelly, who somehow manages to be exceptionally cheerful while coordinating a busy front office."

"Calm, confident, and compassionate, Dr. Herrera and her team make something no one wants to do into something you're really glad you did. They've created a positive, team-oriented environment where patients come first. Thanks to Dr.. H. and her team for taking good care of me!"

"I was referred to Dr. Herrera by my dentist. Apparently, my gum recession needed periodontal intervention, and you can only imagine how scared I was. Dr. Herrera and her staff were professional and caring from the very beginning, and took excellent care of me. They frequently checked in on my anxiety (high) and pain (low). The procedure itself of the gum grafting was surprisingly unpainful, and they did a great job preparing me for what to expect and how to take care of my gums.
I can't give them five stars because, well, it was gum surgery. But they made a terrible diagnosis into a relatively easy and painless procedure. If you want professional and caring gum treatment, definitely find your way to Dr. Herrera's offices."

"Dr. Herrera did an exellent job with the gum graft. To me, the long term results are the highest priority. One year later, my gum looks like nothing ever happened there, nice and healthy. I think they over-did the anxiety management. However I was thoroughly informed, can't blame them. It's just hard to guess what will work better when it was never done on me before. In general, I liked very much that I felt well-informed about the procedure. She described to me what is going to happen on every step of the procedure and recovery. (Yes, I did want to know.) I'm giving it 5 star even though it was my only experience with gum graft. I don't think it can be made into a better experience. The procedure was relatively painless, the recovery process was annoying, with all that liquid diet, stitch removal and special cleaning, but what can you do. The end result is what really matters, and the end result is really good."
